Good Enough For Who, Exactly?

The pressure, delivered with genuine affection by people who mean well, to lower the bar.

Last week we talked about the mediocrity flood - the environment getting louder and more confidently wrong and what a serious maker can do to navigate it. That episode was about the information coming at you from outside. The content, the tutorials, the confident wrong advice circulating freely online.
This week is about something that gets in through a different door. Not through your feed. Through the people around you. Through the conversations you have every day about the work. Through the slow accumulation of small permissions - well-intentioned, kindly given - to care a little less than you do.
There is a pressure that serious makers face that almost nobody talks about. Not the pressure to produce more or move faster. We hear that all the time! No, I’m talking about the pressure to stop working so hard on something the market doesn't always reward and the people around you don't always recognize. The pressure, delivered with genuine affection, to lower the bar.
This episode is about that pressure. Where it comes from, what it actually costs, and what the makers who resist it do differently.
Two genuinely valid orientations toward craft exist in the making world right now and they are both growing at the same time.
One says the most important thing is that people are making. That accessibility and welcome and lowering the barriers to entry - is how a craft tradition stays alive. That everyone deserves to be here regardless of where they are in their development. That encouragement matters and judgment doesn’t have a place here. I agree.
The other says that genuine skill development requires standards. That it requires honest feedback and critique. That it requires the willingness to do work that is genuinely hard before it gets easier. That the craft itself has requirements that exist independent of how anyone feels about them. That holding yourself to a higher standard is how a craft tradition stays alive. I agree.
Both of those things are true. And they pull in opposite directions.
The tension between them is real and makers feel it every single day. In the communities they're part of. In the markets they sell in. In the conversations with people who care about them but don't fully understand why the work has to be done the way it has to be done.
This episode is not about which orientation is right. It's about what happens when a serious maker loses their footing in that tension. When the pressure to lower the bar becomes so normal that the standard starts drifting without anyone making a deliberate decision to let it go.
Standards don't collapse suddenly. They drift. Through the accumulation of small compromises that each seem reasonable in the moment.
The maker who skips the fitting adjustment because it's close enough. Who finishes the seam the fast way because no one will see it from the outside. Who prices the work at what the market will bear rather than what the skill is worth. Who stops entering shows or submitting work because the rejection is discouraging and the audience doesn't seem to notice the difference anyway.
None of those individual decisions is necessarily wrong. Context matters enormously here. Good enough is sometimes genuinely good enough. There is a time and a place for it and knowing when to apply it - is itself a skill. The problem is when good enough becomes the default. When the maker stops being able to tell the difference between a considered decision to simplify and a slow surrender to a lower standard.
There is a cognitive dimension to this that doesn't get considered enough. Deep work - the sustained focused effort required to produce something genuinely excellent - is a capacity. Like any capacity it develops through use and quietly atrophies through neglect. A maker who consistently accepts good enough stops exercising the muscle required for something better. Not immediately. Gradually. And eventually the work that used to feel like a reasonable stretch starts feeling out of reach. Not because the skill disappeared. Because the habit of reaching for it did.
This is the real cost of normalized lower standards. Not the individual piece that could have been better. The slow erosion of the maker's own capacity for the deep work that excellent pieces require. The market might not notice. The maker will. And by the time they notice it clearly, the drift has usually been going on for a while.
Now let's talk about where the pressure to lower the bar actually comes from. Because this is the part that makes it so difficult to resist.
It almost never comes from hostile sources. It comes from people who care about you. Who don't want to see you stressed or exhausted or disappointed by a market that doesn't always reward what you're putting into the work. They're genuinely trying to be supportive when they say things like - why do you work so hard on something nobody notices? Look at what's on the shelf at the big box store, it's no better than what you're already making. Who cares, just get it done. Everyone else is doing it that way.
That sounds like support. And in one sense it is. But there is a meaningful difference between support that holds your standard with you and support that lowers the standard to meet you where you are. The first is harder to give and harder to receive. The second feels better in the moment and costs more over time.
I do want to say something carefully here before I go further. Support that meets you where you are is sometimes exactly right. There are real circumstances - health, disability, significant life events, genuine limits on time or capacity - where the most honest and caring thing someone can do is help you adjust your expectations without guilt. Knowing the difference between that situation and one where the standard is being lowered out of comfort rather than necessity - that's its own kind of clarity. And it matters.
But the conversation I'm describing - the "who cares, the stuff on the shelf is no better" conversation - is usually not that. It's usually someone who is uncomfortable watching you hold a standard they don't fully understand. Someone who finds your commitment to the work slightly baffling and is trying to give you permission to relax in the way they would relax. They mean well. They're just not the right voice to listen to about this particular thing.
And this connects directly back to what we talked about in episode 75. The people around you are setting your baseline for what's normal, what's possible, and what's acceptable. That's not a metaphor. That's how human calibration actually works. A maker who is consistently surrounded by people who don't recognize or value hard work will gradually recalibrate what hard work looks like. Not through any single conversation. Through the accumulated weight of being in a space where the standard you're holding doesn't register as significant.
The antidote is specific. Find the people who get it. Not the people who flatter you - that's a different thing. The people who can actually see what you're doing and why it matters. Who recognize the difference between the seam that's finished properly and the one that's close enough. Who understand why you spent three extra hours on the fitting when the customer probably wouldn't have noticed. Who hold their own work to a comparable standard and don't apologize for it.
Those people exist. They are often quieter than the ones giving you permission to stop. But staying close to them is one of the most important things a serious maker can do. I know this because it's what I do deliberately. The communities I'm part of, the shows I enter, the makers I spend time with - I choose them in part because they get it. Because being around people who recognize the standard makes it easier to hang on to.
Now let me talk about something practical. Because I think the tension between these two orientations toward craft is easier to navigate once you understand that there are actually two different markets operating in this space simultaneously - and that they are not the same market.
One market is accessible. High volume. Lower price point. Work that serves a need and does it adequately. This market is real and legitimate. There are buyers who want what it offers and makers who serve it honestly and well. Nothing wrong with it.
The other market is rigorous. Skill-intensive. Priced commensurately with the knowledge and time and experience the work actually requires. Work that reflects genuine mastery. This market is also real. It's smaller. The buyers in it can tell the difference. And they pay for it because they understand what they're getting.
The problem isn't that both markets exist. It's when a maker doing rigorous work tries to compete on accessible terms. Lowering prices to match makers who aren't investing the same level of skill or time or knowledge. That's not competition. That's devaluation - of the work and of the maker.
Think about it this way. You can buy a reproduction of a Rembrandt for a few dollars. You can hang it on your wall and everyone knows exactly what it is - a paper poster. Nobody is being deceived. Nobody is pretending the original is hanging there. It cost ten bucks and it looks like it cost ten bucks and that's completely fine. The original is priceless. Both of those things exist in the world simultaneously. The existence of the reproduction doesn't diminish the original. And the original doesn't become more accessible by lowering its price to compete with the poster. They are different things serving different needs at different price points. The clarity is in knowing which one you're making.
I stopped doing wedding gowns. That was a deliberate decision and it cost something in the short term. The market for wedding gowns at my level of skill and experience exists. But it's not the same market as the one being served by makers who learned from videos and price accordingly. Trying to compete across that line - holding the standard while pricing to a market that doesn't recognize it - is a losing position. Not because my work wasn't worth it. Because the buyers in that price range weren't looking for what I was bringing. The decision to stop wasn't retreat. It was a clear read of which market I'm actually in and where the work is valued appropriately. I replaced that work with something else that prices commensurately with what I'm actually offering. The income gap got filled. The standard stayed intact.
Now here is where the both-and thinking from episode 72 becomes directly useful. The either-or frame says you either serve the accessible market or you hold your standards. That's a false choice. Both markets can exist. Both serve real needs. The maker who is clear about which market they're in can stop trying to compete across the line and start building the right audience for the right work.
And it also doesn't mean you can't be in both. Just not at the same place at the same time.
Here is what that actually looks like in practice. My higher-end fiber art goes online, into shows, and into museum settings. My smaller sewn products - well made, high quality, but a different category of work entirely - go to Guild shows. Not the same tent. Not the same space. Separate. Deliberate. Because the venue matters. The museum clientele and the Guild show clientele are different people with different expectations and different definitions of what they're looking for. Bringing the wrong work to the wrong venue isn't just a sales problem - it's a misread of the room. The museum customer can tell what belongs there and what doesn't. Showing up with work that doesn't fit that context costs you credibility with exactly the audience that recognizes what you're actually capable of.
And the flip side is equally true. Bringing museum-level pricing to a Guild show tent where people are looking for accessible handmade work is also a misread. The clarity isn't about which work is better. It's about which work belongs where. And that clarity - once you have it - makes both markets work better for you than trying to collapse them into one.
So let’s gather this all up into something you can actually use.
The tension between accessibility culture and mastery culture is not going away. Both are real. Both are growing. And a maker navigating that tension doesn't have to resolve it. They just have to be clear about where they stand in it.
That clarity looks like a few specific things.
Being deliberate about the voices you listen to. The ones who give you permission to lower the bar are not your enemies. But they're not your allies either. Find the ones who get it. Stay close to them. They're the ones who will hold the standard with you when the market is loud and the pressure is real.
Being honest about which market you're in and pricing and positioning accordingly. Declining the work that requires you to compete on terms that don't reflect what you're actually bringing. Replacing it with work and clients and venues that do.
Protecting the deep work. Keeping the muscle in use. Not allowing good enough to become the default through the accumulated weight of small well-intentioned permissions to care a little less.
And holding the line - not because the market always rewards it, it doesn't always - but because the standard is yours. It's what makes the work what it is. Handing it over to the comfort of the people around you or to the pressure of a market that doesn't always recognize it is handing over something that is genuinely hard to get back once it's gone.

Not everyone needs the Studio. But everyone who is serious about this work needs something like it. An environment where the standard is understood, where it's held collectively, and where the pressure runs in the right direction for once.
Two orientations. Neither wrong. But only one standard that is yours to hold or hand over.
The environment will push toward lower. It always does when volume increases and the barrier to entry drops. That's just what happens.
The voices around you will sometimes push in the same direction - kindly, with good intentions, because they care about you and the pressure you're under.
Hear them. Thank them. And then find the people who get it and stay close to them.
They will help you keep the muscle in use. They will remind you which market you're actually in. They will help you show up at the right venue with the right work
The standard is yours. It was always yours. Hold onto it and build on it.
